OUR TEAM

Jon Strand

There are two dynamics I love regarding building teams.  The first I discovered as a result of playing in many different bands - collaboration with the right people always turns into something greater than the sum of its parts.   Each of the Beatles had incredible talent (yes, even Ringo!) - but the four of them together changed music history.  The same is true in business.   The right people with a shared vision can change entire industries.

We make hiring decisions based on a few simple criteria.  Is this a quality person?  Do they care for others?  Are they a good fit for us, and more important - are we a good fit for them?  Would we want to go on a road trip with this person?

I spent 17 years building home improvement sales teams across 24 major cities.  In that time I learned a lifetime of lessons on interviewing, hiring, and investing in our people.

And that is my favorite part:  the opportunity to invest and have lasting impact.

My cousin Paul Wieck, CEO of Western Express, summed it up best, "time is love...so I give people my time."   I believe that is everything.  As leaders if we aren't building up our people we are COMPLETELY missing the mark.   I have had the privilege of many people believing in and investing in me.  I consider it a duty and a profound opportunity to do the same.

So naturally our weekly "sales" meetings have very little to do with sales and everything to do with "how do we improve ourselves?"    The natural result is people who are excited about personal growth and continually growing.  Unsurprisingly it's the quickest way to attaining the highest levels of customer service.  Our close friends at Emergent Construction say it well - "We put our customers first.  We put our people more first."

Bravo.
